Halfaker’s Veteran Fellowship Program (VFP) Eases the Transition between Active Duty and Civilian Life

In 2017, Halfaker and Associates, LLC (Halfaker) launched the Veteran Fellowship Program (VFP) to help Veterans transition into meaningful careers after their military service concludes. The VFP provides transitioning Veterans an opportunity to learn new skills across a variety of areas—including Software Engineering, Data Analytics, and Cyber Security—to help prepare them for full-time employment.

Upon acceptance into the VFP, Veterans meet with the Veteran Engagement Manager, who works directly with them to identify career goals and align their skills to support various corporate departments. Over a three-month period, Veteran Fellows are exposed to a variety of career opportunities. Halfaker provides additional technical training for those who wish to transition into full time employment with the Company. The program has already proven to be immensely successful, with eight current participants, five graduated fellows, and six Company departments supported.

“Last Quarter, three of our VFP candidates became full-time employees. We could not be more proud to have them on board at Halfaker,” said VFP Veteran Engagement Manager, Todd Turner. “VFP candidates provide Halfaker with personnel who are accustomed to adapting in a changing environment and have an aptitude to learn new skills.”

At Halfaker, hiring Veterans goes well beyond the altruistic idea of giving back to those who have served our country; it is investing in someone you can inherently trust, who is well versed in team building, has a high level of resiliency, and exhibits strong organizational commitment.

Halfaker’s commitment to hire Veterans comes from the belief that Veterans have the skills, training, character and leadership experiences to not only identify with Halfaker’s culture, mission, and values, but also to provide unique capabilities and real-world experience to meet our clients’ toughest challenges today, tomorrow and in the future.

As the President and CEO of Halfaker and as a service-disabled Veteran herself, Dawn Halfaker actively advocates for the employment of returning service members—particularly those who have experienced Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and/or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

“Fear of the unknown and perceptions that they’re ‘different’ keep many Veterans with TBI and PTSD from trying to return to the workforce,” said Dawn. “So, it’s critical for employers to commit to hiring Veterans with disabilities, and to do the groundwork to find them the right jobs within their organizations.”

Halfaker realizes the transition from selflessly serving in the Armed Forces into everyday civilian life can be difficult. VFP focuses on the importance of empowering Veterans through a meaningful career that provides discipline, leadership, teamwork and a sense of purpose. The Company identifies all available positions that would offer a Veteran the challenging career they desire to help them maintain their sense of purpose, community and team all while providing the opportunity to Continue to Serve. Halfaker’s efforts to decrease Veteran unemployment have been recognized by CivillianJobs.com, with the Company being named a Most Valuable Employer (MVE) for military for eight years.

“I am very grateful to be a part of this incredible Veteran Fellowship team at Halfaker,” says Veteran Fellow Jason Gao. “It provides a great path where I can develop and explore my true interests, based on the skill sets and knowledge that I have gained from the past. I am currently working for the Information Technology Department and I believe this is a great place to start my career.”

Halfaker is always looking for Veterans to join our growing team and support our mission of Continuing to Serve. Please visit the Halfaker careers page to learn more and see a full list of employment opportunities.
