Recognized for Giving Back: Halfaker receives Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Award
Tysons Corner, VA—Halfaker’s company motto is simple: Continuing to Serve. And simply put, they are doing just that. The Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce recently recognized the company’s efforts for business leadership and above-and-beyond corporate social responsibility by presenting Halfaker the 2012 Women-owned Business of the Year Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Award in front of nearly 700 members of the business community, elected officials and other community leaders on June 20, 2012. Founded in 1925, the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce develops, encourages and promotes the economic vitality, quality of life and political interests of Fairfax County businesses and citizens. “We’re proud to honor these companies, non-profits and individuals, which embody the strong commitment to community common throughout Northern Virginia businesses,” said Fairfax Chamber President & CEO Jim Corcoran. “Through their leadership and corporate social responsibility efforts, they make meaningful contributions to the well-being of our community.”
On hand to accept the award were the company’s CEO Dawn Halfaker and CFO Emily McMahan, both former military officers who are passionate about their motto and look for any opportunity they can to Continue to Serve by supporting various causes as well as their communities. As owners of the company, each year they set aside funds to live their motto and despite being a small company, they are having a big impact. Some of the causes the company supports include supporting the homeless through So Others Might Eat; building a specially adapted home for a Wounded Warrior through Homes for Our Troops; organizing blood drives through the American Red Cross; participating in holiday events at local veteran hospitals; and supporting employee organizations that focus on mentoring inner city male teens in Baltimore.
Halfaker is also very involved in supporting the Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the current generation of wounded warriors returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. “Without the support of our generous partners, like Halfaker and Associates, LLC, Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) would not be able to fulfill our mission to honor and empower wounded warriors. Dawn and her staff are truly passionate about meeting the needs of this generation of wounded service members through a variety of channels,” noted Steven Nardizzi, Executive Director of the Wounded Warrior Project.
During the acceptance speech, both Dawn and Emily recognized that one of the best aspects of Continuing to Serve is that it provides an opportunity for employees, partners and clients to get involved and also direct company support to causes they are passionate about. Emily McMahan commented, “We have employees at all levels of the organization energized about volunteering to promote causes they are passionate towards. This is what our culture is all about. For example, one of our company Associates, Catherine Taegel, has organized several volunteer events including blood drives with the American Red Cross and a landscaping project for a So Others Might Eat (SOME) playground that is used by children who are involved in the SOME rehabilitation program. It says a lot when 22 employees and their family members show up at 0900 on a Saturday morning in DC to volunteer to weed, mulch and plant flowers.”
Halfaker’s passion is to continue to serve, and the entire Halfaker team looks forward to continuing to share their time and talents on a regular basis to make a positive difference in the world. They would also like to recognize and thank the other awardees for their charitable contributions and passion for serving others including:
