Technical Editor/Writer
Halfaker and Associates, LLC seeks a Technical Editor/Writer with Joint Staff experience for a full-time opening in the Joint Staff Executive Secretariat's Action Division, the Editorial and Action Processing Branch (EAPB).

Description:
The Technical Editor/Writer at the Editorial and Action Processing Branch of the Joint Staff, Pentagon provides editorial processing and standards for correspondence signed by the “Top Five” flag officers on the Joint Staff. These documents that are edited will be circulated within the Pentagon, on Capitol Hill, in other executive branch agencies, and through international channels. The Technical Editor/Writer must have experience in and knowledge of editorial principles and techniques of communicating information to ensure that (1) the style and manner of presentation of the information suits the intended medium, (2) the subject matter is sufficiently clear and cogent to convey the appropriate message to the intended audience, and (3) the document fulfills its communications objectives.
The Technical Editor/Writer will be responsible for the accurate review and correction of high level official documents, correspondence and other action items. The editor must ensure that each document reflect proper grammar, spelling, format, punctuation, capitalizations, symbols, terminology, titles and other processing guidelines established by Department of Defense(DoD) and Joint Staff (JS) directives. The editor will ensure that all documents that require review display the proper security markings and other special classifications in accordance with DoD directives. The technical editor is also responsible for addressing any questions or concerns with the reviewed correspondence and logging them appropriately with the corresponding processing forms. Through checks, verification and research, the editor will ensure that verified footnotes, references, names, addresses and dates are congruent with requirements set forth by the Joint Staff. The Technical Editor/Writer may utilize electronic document templates for most document types (JS Form 136s, memorandums, papers, etc.) to ensure compliance with standard formatting styles and guidelines.
Joint Staff technical editors must maintain an error rate of less than 10% and review a minimum of 60 action items per month.Requirements:
- You must be a US Citizen
- Security Designation: Top Secret/SSBI/ SCI eligible
- Degree: Bachelors (In related field - Journalism, English, Communications)
- Minimum of 6 years related experience in technical editing/ writing
- Must enjoy and be able to effectively operate in a fast paced work environment
- Must be a master of the English language
- Must have prior military or government experience
- Must be able to understand, write and speak the “language” of the government, particularly the Department of Defense
- Must be able to multi-task
- Be able to prioritize assignments with little to no guidance
- Must have outstanding organizational skills
- Be able to utilize interpersonal skills and professionally interact with high ranking officials
- Ability to operate in the Joint Staff environment with short suspense deadlines supporting various audiences
- Have technical knowledge of operating MS Office suite as well as scanners and copiers
- Have knowledge and experience with DoD security classification procedures to ensure documents are properly marked
- Masters Degree preferred
- Joint Staff experience a plus
- Pentagon experience strongly desired
